The 2011 film 'Moneyball' shifted ideas about sports and statistics
Based on the Michael Lewis book of the same name, the film starring Brad Pitt depicts the attempts of the 2002 Oakland A's to leverage data analysis to overcome their low-budget woes ($41M) and compete with big-budget teams like the New York Yankees ($125M). Other sports and leagues, including the NBA and NFL, would adopt a similar logic: find what the market undervalues and exploit it.

The first green star ever discovered was a white dwarf, which can appear in many colors, despite its name.
The stellar remnants were so named because of their size relative to other stars and the high surface temperature of the first discovered white dwarfs, which made them appear bluish-white.
- Research suggests that white dwarfs exhibit varying surface colors because trace elements, such as carbon, calcium, and sodium, interact with the surrounding dense helium plasma, altering which colors are absorbed.
- WD J1330+6435, located about 284 light-years from Earth, appears green due to the presence of calcium, lithium, and sodium in its atmosphere.

By separating light with tools such as prisms, scientists can reveal the presence and composition of celestial matter by identifying color fingerprints unique to specific elements and molecules.
In Earth-based experiments, different energized gases glow with distinct spectra, or bands of color, based on the configuration of their electrons, which only absorb and emit specific wavelengths of light.
- While clouds of gas, exoplanets, and other celestial objects naturally radiate light based on their temperature—much like a hot coil on a stove glows red-orange—small deviations in specific colors can be matched to a database of color signatures, which indicates the presence of the cataloged substances.
- If starlight travels through an exoplanet's atmosphere on its way to Earth, the resulting absorption spectra—the original starlight minus colors that were absorbed by gases—can show what molecules are present in the exoplanet's atmosphere.
- If the star is not in an observer's line of sight, they may instead see specific colors emitted by the gases in the exoplanet's atmosphere that were previously absorbed, known as the emission spectrum.

Crows are believed to have intelligence on par with that of a 7-year-old child and demonstrate complex behaviors, from tool use to recognizing human faces.
Researchers have been studying crows to better understand the cognitive capacity of some of the most intelligent animals on Earth.
- The birds have been shown to not only remember human faces for years, but also develop strong relationships with individuals (both liking and disliking specific humans based on interactions).
- Studies have even captured the birds engaging in complex funeral rituals for deceased acquaintances, a behavior believed to have evolved centuries ago to gang up on any predators they deem responsible.
- If you see crows in your yard often, chances are they are the same ones. Urban crows are known to depart the city at night, typically flying as far as 20 miles to rest in large groups before returning to the same spot.

White dwarfs are the leftover cores of sun-like stars, which expel their layers after running out of nuclear fuel.
Stars like the sun counteract the gravitational pressure from their immense mass by fusing lighter elements into heavier ones, converting mass into energy that exerts outward radiative pressure.
- Low- and intermediate-mass stars fuse hydrogen into helium and helium into (primarily) carbon and oxygen in their cores, but lack the gravitational pressure needed to eventually fuse even heavier elements.
- In the end stage of these stars, radiative pressure and stellar pulsations will have driven enough stellar wind to blow out the star's outer layers.
- With the star lacking enough gravity to hold onto its diffuse outer layers, they are expelled, leaving behind a white dwarf surrounded by a planetary nebula.

The Ouija board originated in 19th-century America as a business-minded response to the growing fascination with spiritualism, or the belief that the dead and living could communicate.
- Partly a reaction to the mass fatalities of the Civil War and the era's short lifespans, spiritualism offered solace to people and made séances an acceptable group activity.
- The Kennard Novelty Company created the first Ouija board as a quick and easy way to receive messages from the dead, thereby creating a hugely successful product.
- The Ouija board features the full alphabet, the numbers zero through nine, and the words “yes,” “no,” and “goodbye," so spirits can direct you to share their responses.
- Ouija boards experienced their highest popularity during times of uncertainty and loss, such as WWII, which led to one store selling 50,000 boards over five months.
- In the 1970s, "The Exorcist" made the public afraid of Ouija boards as the film depicted a young girl who became possessed by a demon after playing with one.

Unlike black holes and neutron stars, white dwarfs are the only major stellar remnant not to form via a supernova.
Before dying, all stars fuse lighter elements into heavier ones in their interiors, releasing the energy necessary to counter the gravitational pressure of their enormous mass.
- For stars up to about eight times the mass of the sun, there is insufficient gravity to increase core pressure and temperature enough to abundantly fuse elements beyond oxygen.
- Lacking the gravity to hold onto their outer layers, low- and intermediate-mass stars, like the sun, gradually shed them, leaving behind a white dwarf supported by quantum pressure from electrons.
- Stars that begin their lives with masses between about 8 and 18 solar masses have sufficient mass to overcome electron pressure, collapsing the electrons into protons to make neutrons.
- This large-scale neutron production turns the core into a neutron star while producing massive amounts of neutrinos, which blast away the layers surrounding the core in a violent supernova.
- Although neutron stars are supported by quantum pressure from their neutrons, in stars that begin their lives with more than 18 solar masses, this pressure cannot prevent runaway gravitational collapse.
- The gravitational collapse of a massive star into a black hole can also create a rebounding shockwave of neutrinos and energy—a Type II supernova—the same blast that forms neutron stars.

Research suggests that the small red dots in images of deep space captured by the James Webb Space Telescope since 2022 are black hole stars—black holes surrounded by enormous clouds of gas.
MoM-BH*-1, a black hole star candidate that formed about 660 million years after the Big Bang, spans the size of the solar system and radiates with the intensity of a black hole—about 100 billion times more than any known star—but in colors that resemble a star.
- Little red dots have been observed in virtually all deep-field images of the early universe, and their appearance is thought to arise from ionized gas surrounding the black hole scattering the light emitted by infalling, heated material—not unlike how wildfire particles make sunlight look red.
- The spectral signature of the little red dots ruled out various hypotheses proposed outside of black hole stars, including supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies—little red dots lacked the expected X-ray emissions—and dust-obscured black holes—little red dots lacked the infrared light expected from such abundant dust.
- Earlier observations of little red dots were not possible because powerful enough telescopes to look back at the very early universe in sufficient detail, such as the James Webb Space Telescope, did not exist, but available date suggests that the supermassive black holes at the center of today's galaxies may be the later stages of black hole stars.

The Royal Game of Ur, which dates back as far as 2600 BCE, is believed to be one of the oldest board games in the world.
The city of Ur was a major hub for the Sumerians, one of the first human civilizations in ancient Mesopotamia.
- British archaeologist Leonard Woolley discovered five game boards while excavating the Royal Cemetery of Ur in the 1920's. At the time, nobody understood how to play the game.
- In the 1980s, a curator at the British Museum discovered that a clay tablet from the second century BCE was a set of instructions for the Royal Game of Ur.
- Players race to reach the end of the board, rolling dice to determine their moves.
- Some squares on the board featured zodiac signs and were said to predict players' fortunes.

Many airports have dedicated stores for luggage, despite most passengers having luggage with them already
This podcast episode argues that airport luggage stores exist due, in part, to the security measures implemented after 9/11, creating capitve audiences of travelers. Some argue that airport luggage store shoppers coming from places where luggage is more expensive could be purchasing luggage in international airports. Specifically, the episode traces airport history from the very beginning to today's luggage store in your local Terminal B.

Some stars take longer to form than the current age of the universe
The first stars only burned for millions of years, providing the universe's first heavy elements. Some in the current population will burn for trillions of years, delaying the appearance of black dwarfs and other exotic cold stars.

The first two white dwarfs were discovered on January 31st, 79 years apart.
The first white dwarf was discovered by William Herschel in 1783—less than two years after he discovered Uranus—though the nature of the star was unknown at the time.
- In 1862, Alvan Graham Clark identified the second white dwarf, Sirius B, whose existence was predicted 18 years earlier by Friedrich Bessel to explain irregularities in the movement of Sirius.
- An understanding of white dwarfs as stellar remnants did not emerge until the 1900s, and their name was not coined until 1922 by Willem Jacob Luyten.

Gaming out how our solar system might catch a new planet
If Pluto's downgraded status to a dwarf planet has got you down, consider this: Scientists think there's a chance our solar system could catch a new planet. The first ever observed so-called Interstellar Object was reported in 2017, a reddish, cigar-shaped rock astronomers named Oumuamua. Although it left in 2022, scientists believe an object with the right mass and trajectory might take a seat at the planetary table. Learn how it would work here.

Scientists are using CRISPR to genetically modify felines so they don't trigger allergies in humans.
Around 10% to 20% of people are allergic to cats, typically because the body incorrectly labels the Fel d 1 protein in cats' saliva and oil glands (which rub onto fur and their surroundings) as a threat that the human immune system must respond to in order to keep safe.
- In early-stage research, scientists have been using this molecular scissor approach to snip the gene responsible for encoding that protein, reducing the overall amount of this allergy-triggering protein and effectively making more hypoallergenic cats.
- Scientists remain unclear about the role of the Fel d 1 protein for feline health or function, but so far, there is no known complication from suppressing it to make felines more allergy-friendly.
